Engagement photos...I absolutely love these! I'll give you a couple of reasons why. First off, being engaged is a very small portion of time that you and your partner will experience, especially if you compare it to your marriage. Secondly, since it is such a small window of time, I think it's beautiful to remember the emotions you went through while you were engaged. A lot can be happening during an engagement. You're probably planning a wedding. You could also be looking at moving in together, buying a house, or all sorts of other things.
Since this is such a special time, I'm a big fan of capturing it, so you can look back on the memories of being engaged.
Now the last thing you need to do is worry, so I'm going to give you 4 ways to prepare for a relaxing and fun engagement photo shoot!
1) Pick a location that speaks to you and your fiancé.
I encourage couples to pick a spot that feels really comfortable. The range is really open, but narrow it down. Are you most comfortable at home? You two can prepare something fun in the kitchen and have some wine to loosen up the nerves. I personally just had an in-home photo session (no I'm not engaed LOL), and we absolutely loved how the photos came out. We were in our element and felt so relaxed.
If you want to get out, do you have a favorite coffee shop you frequently go to? Are you more adventurous? Perhaps a small hike towards a cliff view could be the perfect spot. Whatever it may be, just ask yourself if the location speaks to you.
2) Figure out what to wear.
Planning this ahead (like a day or two before) will help make sure you won't stress the day of the photo shoot. Now a question you're probably asking is, "What should I wear?" This is a totally valid question and I'll answer it here.
Wear what makes you feel comfortable! That could be jeans and a nice top or a fun summer dress. I do recommend to wear something that pops against the setting that you're in. Don't be afraid to wear patterns, bright lipstick, a cool hat, or snazzy blazer.
Also, if you can't decide, bring options! I usually always give one outfit change for my engagement photo shoots. This gives us a variety and you can wear multiple things that you love! Most of all, be comfy! Oh, ladies! Here's a pro-tip. If you're going to wear heals, just bring some flats that you can use for all the walking in between. You'll thank me later. ;)
3) Eat a small meal or snack before the photo shoot.
This may sound like a silly tip. However, lots of people forget to eat when they're nervous and excited. I totally get it! I do that too, but please eat before! You want to look alert and happy in the photos and filling your belly with something nutritious before hand will help you feel more natural. Also, if you want to make sure your skin is clear, drink plenty of water the days leading up to the photo shoot.
4) Trust the photographer.
Your photographer (hopefully me :D) knows what they're doing and they know how to guide you. I work with all sorts of people and my job is to make you look good, so I'm going to do everything in my power to do that.
We hire all sorts of people because they're the professional and know what they're doing. You just have to go in with an open mind that trusts the person you hired. As a photographer, I know what I'm doing, and I'm going to make sure you'll have fun and relax. You're going to get some beautiful images that you will always be able to hold on to.
I hope these tips help prepare you, so you feel confident and relaxed going into your engagement photo shoot. If you have any other questions or other tips you'd like to share, leave them in the comments below!
